Handley Recreation Center receives check for $ 15,000

LEAD, SD – The Sanford Lab Visitor Center, along with the Sanford Underground Research Center, presented a check for $ 15,000 to Handley Recreation Center on Monday.

The Handley Center is home to the Lead-Deadwood Chapter of the Black Hills Boys and Girls Club as well as youth and family activities. The plan is to use the underutilized space to develop the youth program.

The gift is in recognition of the recent purchase of the visitor center by the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority.

“Well, a lot of our programs are focused on STEM K-12 education programs, so we thought that was a good fit,” said Mike Headley, executive director of the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority. Handley Center has a lot of offerings for students, and we thought it would be a good way to start developing a partnership with The Handley Center and helping with children’s programs here in the community. “

Headley says the $ 15,000 will help launch plans to create a versatile and welcoming space for children and adults. The plans will include classrooms, a day care center, a full commercial kitchen, as well as meeting and office space.

The estimated cost of these renovations is $ 2.16 million.
