The October 2021 Rec of the Month spotlights the Sports and Recreation Center at William Paterson University.


The Recreational Services Department at William Paterson University (WPU) provides the opportunity to participate in a wide range of recreational activities that reflect the interests, needs, and abilities of the WPU community. Part of the larger intercollegiate sports and recreation department, Recreation Services strives to enhance the quality of life for all participants through a variety of recreational and educational programs designed to promote health and well-being, social interaction, lifelong learning and constructive use of free time. WPU’s recreational services provide employment opportunities, experiential learning and leadership development activities.


The 41,172 square foot sports and recreation center includes a weight room, cardio area, group fitness room, basketball and racquetball courts. Other on-campus sports and recreation facilities include an ancillary fitness space — which houses cardio machines, weight-training equipment, and a group fitness studio — as well as a separate six-lane outdoor running track .


Adventure travel

Adventure travel offers students the opportunity to participate in outdoor and active experiences. In fact, the trips showcase the beauty of northern New Jersey and the surrounding region.

Intramural programs

Throughout the semester, a variety of six-week intramural leagues and one-day tournaments are offered, totaling 22 intramural programs. Students also have the opportunity to try out extramural teams, including flag football and basketball. During the Spring 2020 semester, the Men’s Extramural Basketball team won the NJ NIRSA Statement Extramural Basketball Tournament, in addition to competing in extramural flag football, men’s and women’s football and basketball.

Sports clubs

WPU offers five sports clubs: rugby, bowling, ice hockey, cheerleading and dance. The program has become regular participants in National Championship competitions, with Bowling winning three National Championship titles through the ITC (1992) and the Collegiate Club Championship (2017 and 2018), while Ice Hockey, cheerleading and rugby (15 and 7) have reached the highest level. stage.

Aquatics and safety

In addition to free recreational swimming time, the Aquatic Department offers CPR/AED, First Aid and Lifeguard certification courses for students, staff and the surrounding community.


Group fitness classes are free to all students and are a weekly schedule that includes class formats such as yoga, zumba, kickboxing, and bootcamp.


A wellness program consisting of information sessions and practical work is organized throughout each semester, including meditation, nutrition and foam rolling workshops.

Special events

Jamming at the Rec, Midnight Madness and De-Stress Fest are favorite events each year, for example.


  • Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, WPU intramurals were poised to reach their highest levels of participation among all students, freshmen, and female-identifying students.
  • The Sports and Recreation Center has traditionally hosted the NJSIAA High School Volleyball Championships each fall.
  • More than 70 student workers are employed by Recreation Services each year. As a result, the department is the largest employer of student workers on campus.
  • Recreation Services works closely with the Department of Nursing. For example, the Sports and Recreation Center serves as a rotation for the community health rotation of nursing students.
