The swimming pool at the Hard’ack recreation area is open all year round

ST. ABLANS, Vermont (WCAX) — A state-of-the-art swimming pool is causing a stir in St. Albans. City leaders say it’s Vermont’s first indoor/outdoor pool. In summer, it is open to the sky. In winter, it is covered with an inflatable dome.

A state-of-the-art swimming pool is causing a stir in St. Albans.

“It’s been a long time coming for us and it’s just been great for the community and I’m so excited to be here,” said Isaac Bashaw, lifeguard at the brand new Hard’ack Pool.

More than 100 children were also excited to try out the new pool when it opened on Monday.

“We’ve been following the progress of this pool opening and we were really excited when it finally passed because we tried to get it approved in the city budget a few years ago and it didn’t was adopted and we were really excited when we finally did,” said Elizabeth Calcagni, a local parent.

The pool will be a year-round community facility and people here say they are more than happy to jump in.

The pool is filled with fun features like a waterslide and mushroom waterfall, and staff say the upgrades are welcome. “We’ve had a pool in the community for over 40 years and it was in decline. So to be able to replace it before you lose it and replace it with this pool is amazing. And it’s a wonderful place for families, it’s a wonderful place for kids,” said Recreation Director Kelly Viens.

The pool isn’t just fun for kids. It is also handicapped and mobility-impaired friendly. “It’s like, okay, I can come here and be with my grandkids and also be able to participate in swimming,” Cindy Shambo said. “There are also other people we communicate with who also need help, so I will go back and let them know that there is everything you may need to get into this pool.

But above all, according to Viens, what is most important is how the pool can become a place where all members of the community can come together. “Come to the pool. It’s a really fun place. We’re really excited to have everyone visit,” she said.
