LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Officials at Lake Mead National Recreation Area have announced the list of closures for this summer. These closures have nothing to do with the historic loss of water from Lake Mead, they are annual closures due to extreme summer heat.
Seasonal closures for the areas listed below are in effect from May 15 to September 30.
- Goldstrike Canyon
- White Rock Canyon and White Rock Canyon Trail
- Arizona Hot Springs and Arizona Hot Springs Trail
- Liberty Arch Trail
- Lonely Palm Trail
- Sugar Loaf Trail
- Lone Palm and Sugar Loaf area
The hot springs near Goldstrike Canyon and White Rock Canyon will remain accessible from the Colorado River and remain open to the public during the seasonal shutdown. The River Mountain Loop Trail and Historic Railroad Trail will also remain open.
In the Southwestern United States, excessive heat is the number one weather-related killer according to the National Weather Service.
People often get into trouble when they start a canyon hike during the cooler hours of the morning, only to have to come out during the high late afternoon temperatures. In some of these regions, temperatures can easily exceed 120 degrees.
