Even if the weather is not there yet, it is finally spring.

While you want to get out, you might also want something new and different from the HUB lawn or the Arboretum. This is where the Stone Valley Recreation Center comes in.

If you don’t already know, Stone Valley is a perfect opportunity for exploration and outdoor activities for students and those who live nearby. Stone Valley is located just 14 miles from campus and is considered an extension of the University Park Campus Recreation Centers.

Stone Valley’s appeal lies in the wide range of opportunities it offers. The property has over 20 miles of its own hiking trails, which then stretch out into even more trails in the Rothrock State Forest. In winter, the trails are ideal for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. During peak fishing season, you can find a variety of fish in Stone Valley’s Lake Perez as long as you have a valid fishing license.

A huge plus for Stone Valley comes from student discounts. Stone Valley offers a variety of activities like paddle boats, canoes, kayaks, paddle boards, and rowboats. Although these activities do not open until May 29, students can still enjoy them in late spring and early summer until September 6. It will cost students no more than $12 an hour to hire one of these boat options, sometimes as cheap as $7 for a half-hour paddle boat for two people.

Registered student organizations can also benefit from reduced rates for group boat rentals. Organizations must book a minimum of six or more boats for at least two hours, but they will be able to rent these boats at a cheap flat rate rental rate of $8 per hour plus some minor safety and insurance fees .

Students can also benefit from discounts on cabins that can accommodate up to six people. It’s possible to rent a four-person cabin or a six-person cabin, and both cost $60 a night in low season and $132 a night in high season. High season is considered to be during times like Arts Fest weekend, any Penn State home football weekend, start weekend and other times explained here. Most cabins include amenities such as access to a central public bath, electricity, gas furnace and refrigerator.
