Public aid needed to clean up the recreation area along the south shore of Lake Cowanesque on September 4


LAWRENCEVILLE, Pa. (WETM) – A recreation area cleanup on the south side of Lake Cowanesque is scheduled for this Saturday, Sept. 4, at 8 a.m.

The cleanup is being coordinated by the Friends of Tioga-Hammond and Cowanesque Lakes along with Tioga County bass anglers, the Cowanesque Valley Bass League, the Keystone Trail Association and other groups with assistance from the general public.

Those assisting with cleanup are asked to report to the last lodge closest to the boat launch along the South Rim Recreation Area off State Route 49, just five miles east. west of Lawrenceville.

“The Tompkins Recreation Area and Campground remain closed due to damage from recent heavy rains and flooding, so we cannot meet there,” said event spearhead Dave Snyder. .

They hope for good turnout and that the more people who show up, the more work that can be done, he said.

Participants are encouraged to bring rakes of any type and size, wear sturdy closed-toe leather work boots, durable leather work gloves, and long pants, such as overalls or work pants.

“Originally, we were focused on cleaning up trash, but the storm changed those plans,” he said, “This cleanup became a timely event. US Army Corps of Engineers personnel worked hard to clean up the debris so that the recreation areas can be reopened to the public.It will really give staff a boost to achieve this goal.

Helpers are asked not to bring their motorboats, kayaks or canoes to participate in this event as it is not a water based cleanse.
