Oahe’s 29th Annual Hunt takes place this weekend in Oahe’s Downstream Recreation Area

The Oahe Downstream Recreation Area at Pierre/Fort Pierre will be closed tomorrow and Sunday (November 20-21, 2021) from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the 29and Annual Oahe Hunt.

The Oahe hunt takes place on a weekend each year and is restricted to hunters who require a wheelchair to get around. The South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks says this event is the only time hunting is permitted in the Oahe Downstream Recreation Area during fall hunting seasons.

Entry to the area is restricted to participating hunters, hunting volunteers and staff. The road entering the recreation area from SD Highway 1806 will be barricaded at the Stilling Basin Bridge and personnel will be stationed on West Bank Toe Road from 1806 to restrict traffic. Campground unit #3 is accessible to pedestrians only. The east bank curb road off SD Highway 1804 will provide access to the power plant and the east and west tailings areas, but the road will be barricaded at the bottom prohibiting further travel west and south. The Oahe Hunt is an annual event sponsored by the US Army Corps of Engineers and the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks.
