IRON RIVER, Mich. (WLUC) — Voters in Iron River and area will vote Aug. 2 on whether to renew Windsor Center’s mileage.

Youth programs, a library, clothes closet and community theater performances are some of the activities found at the Windsor Centre. The recreation center‘s mileage renewal is on the August 2 ballot.

“We would be looking for around $120,000 to $130,000 a year,” said Dawn Pisoni, director of recreation at Windsor Centre.

If passed, the proposal will be a renewal of the current half-mill until 2026. The building is almost 100 years old and needs updating.

“The next renovation project is in the auditorium, there is no air conditioning,” Pisoni said. “We’re looking to put in fans and windows to get more air flow, so it’s more comfortable during the summer.”

Pisoni said the millage proposal will also seek to fund youth and adult programs.

“Our programs touch different aspects of the community,” Pisoni said. “We offer sports, exercise, arts and entertainment, open mic nights and we have programs for adults and seniors. We try to reach everyone in the community.

On Friday, 25 children took part in outdoor athletics events. The Windsor Center’s assistant summer recreation director, Jim Pellizzer, said attendance at youth programs has increased since the start of the pandemic.

“In 2020, parents were very distraught,” Pellizzer explained. “They said they had to get the kids to do something. We made this joke saying we opened the water slide down the hill and we say we were the only water park in the country that was open then. Parents loved it, kids loved it and it really brought them back to life after being cooped up for a while.

Pisoni said the proposal should be adopted in four municipalities; Township of Bates, Township of Stambaugh, Town of Iron River and Township of Iron River come into effect. She said he has overwhelmingly passed each of the last two renewal cycles.
