A few steps from their home, Kim Tran is experiencing a new family adventure.

“We’re just taking the little one here just to explore the reserve here,” Tran said Sunday.

Elk Grove’s latest outdoor addition is now less than three weeks away from the official opening, but some weren’t willing to wait.

The reserve, located in the heart of town just outside the Elk Grove Aquatic Center, has a network of trails, wetland lookouts, a rock climbing area and even a an outdoor exercise area.

“This project will increase recreational space and improve the health and well-being of our residents,” former Mayor Steve Ly said when the project was announced.

The opening of the recreation center comes two years after city leaders unveiled the aquatic center with an Olympic-sized pool and lazy river.

“When it first opened, I came on opening day and just cheered it on because it’s just walking distance from our house,” Tran said.

But the huge water recreation area only opened a few months before the pandemic shut it down. Now it will be open again with a huge outdoor recreation area to go with it. The Tran family can’t wait to see this new community attraction, which is sure to attract neighbors near and far.

“I’m really excited to find another playground for her to play with and this place is really close,” Tran said of her daughter.

Construction began in July 2020, and Elk Grove will receive a $3 million grant from California State Parks to cover the costs.
