HPD investigates murder after body found in MacKenzie State Recreation Area

Authorities have opened a homicide investigation after a body was found at MacKenzie State Recreation Area in Puna on Saturday July 31.

Shortly after 4 p.m., Hawaii Police Department Puna Patrol officers responded to the MacKenzie State Recreation Area after a fisherman reported locating a body on the rocks near the shore.

Detectives from the Zone I Criminal Investigation Section responded to the scene to continue the investigation. Hawaii Fire Department personnel helped push about 15 feet down the cliff to retrieve the decomposing remains. The victim was transported to Hilo Medical Center for official pronouncement of death. Police believe the body had been there for about a week.

An autopsy was performed on Tuesday morning August 3 and the medical examiner concluded that the victim died from a gunshot wound to the head and the manner of death was homicide.

Due to the advanced stage of decomposition, a positive identification is pending.
