The City of Dallas has approved more bond money for the construction of the Willie B. Johnson Recreation Center in Hamilton Park.

Activity and technology centers for seniors, a gymnasium and a parking lot expansion include work underway at 12225 Willowdell Drive. The construction is funded by the 2017 bond program that was approved by Dallas voters.

The city council did not approve more than $560,431.54 to fund additional work at the facility at its May 25 meeting. The project budget is now $8.57 million, according to the approved resolution.

The change was necessary to comply with building code upgrades and to respond to changes in Oncor Electric Delivery Co.’s planned electricity delivery, council liaison Maddy Madrazo said in an email. . Crews are also working to repair damage to existing interior spaces that was caused by winter storm Uri in February 2021.

The website for the 2017 bond program lists the estimated completion date as May 27, but Madrazo said work is now expected to be completed in September.
