Top of the Pines is a 175 acre recreation area located in Ouray County. Slumgullion Center and Hovenweep National Monument.

“We are delighted and honored that IDA has chosen to welcome Top of the Pines into the IDA Dark Sky Places program,” said TOP Chairman of the Board, Brad Wallis.

“This is a significant achievement and TOP’s dark sky friendly policies will help protect and preserve its incredible star-filled skies. I would like to thank County BOCC and the other members of the TOP Board of Directors who have made it possible,” he said.

The International Dark Sky Association is an organization designed to encourage the preservation and protection of dark sites by implementing lighting policies, environmentally friendly outdoor lighting, and public education.

“When used indiscriminately, artificial light can disrupt ecosystems, impact human health, waste money and energy, contribute to climate change, and block our vision and connection to nature. universe,” the organization said in a press release.

The organization cited TOP’s “outstanding dedication and commitment” to maintaining dark skies as the reason for designating the space in the program.
