BLM Seeks Nominations for San Rafael Swell Recreation Area Advisory Board


PRICE, Utah – The Bureau of Land Management invites nominations for the San Rafael Swell Recreation Area Advisory Board (Board), which makes recommendations to the Secretary of the Interior for the management of these unique public lands in East Central Utah. The Board is made up of seven people from diverse backgrounds and these appointments will fill one vacant position, as well as two member terms that are due to expire this fall.

The John D. Dingell, Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act, Section 1223, directed the Secretary of the Interior to establish the board to help prepare and implement the management plan for the San Rafael Swell recreation area. Congress established the San Rafael Swell Recreation Area to provide protection, conservation, and enhancement of the recreational, cultural, natural, scenic, wildlife, ecological, historic, and educational resources of the area. Board members serve a three-year term.

As published in the Federal Register, the BLM will consider applications received through August 18, 2022. Applications are being accepted for the following positions:
• An elected leader of a federally recognized tribe that has significant cultural or historical ties to and expertise in the landscape, archaeological sites, or cultural sites in the recreation area;
• A representative of motorized recreational users; and
• A representative of non-motorized recreational users.

Individuals can nominate themselves or others to serve on the Board. Applicants will be evaluated based on their training, education and knowledge of the San Rafael Swell Recreation Area. The San Rafael Swell Recreation Area encompasses approximately 217,000 acres of public land managed by BLM. The “Swell” features magnificent badlands of wildly eroded, brightly colored sandstone formations, deep canyons, and giant slabs of stone tilted vertically by massive geological upheaval.
