Main water filters


Tap water is not of high quality. It contains harmful impurities (rust, sand, clay, salt), there is an unpleasant smell, taste. This affects the functionality of household appliances: kettles, boilers, dishwashers, washing machines. The main harm is such water for human health.

The solution to this problem will be water purification using a main filter.



The main filter is a mechanism for purifying water from impurities, particles of dirt. Outwardly, it is a cylindrical flask, which is mounted in the water main. That is why they are called so.

The scope of the main filter has no restrictions. It is installed in the bathroom, kitchen, laundry room, garage and other rooms as needed.

The design includes a collapsible plastic or stainless metal flask with a replaceable filter element (mesh or cartridge).


  • Purification from impurities. The tap water does not meet drinking water quality standards. Often, municipal services do not have equipment for cleaning chemicals, which include pesticides, heavy metals, carcinogens. Chlorinated water should also be treated with a main filter, as bacteria live in it.

Types and types of main water filters


Separation according to the temperature of the supplied water.
Filters are installed on the cold and hot mains, depending on this, the types of products are distinguished. The device for cold liquid does not need heat-resistant materials of manufacture.
Hot flow requires a stable structure.

Hot water filter is also suitable for cold water. But a product designed for cold water cannot be used for hot.

By type of cleaning

Steel mesh is suitable for cleaning hot liquids, gases, polymer solutions. Grids are of three types:

  • sintered five-layer wire mesh;
  • sintered metal fibers;
  • sintered powder metal.

Devices are intended for cleaning large mechanical elements from 50 to 500 microns. The basis of the design is a stainless steel mesh. The mesh retains impurities, it is often contaminated from this, and requires washing.

There are two cleaning methods: direct, reverse. Direct rinsing means processing under running water. Reverse cleaning refers to a more effective method, while dirt, particles are knocked out by jets of water.

However, even with regular care, the mesh becomes clogged with dirt. In this case, clean manually or must be replaced. The filter with direct cleaning lasts 2 years, with reverse cleaning up to 5 years. The body of these models is made of brass.

Products with a replaceable module remove fine particles from 5 to 25 microns. When choosing a cartridge, one should be guided, first of all, by the quality of the water that is being purified. Each type of cartridge is designed for its chemical composition.

The materials used to make cartridges are varied. According to the main materials for the manufacture of products, they are divided: corrugated, winding cartridge, models with propylene.

  • Traditional traditional thread models are considered for deep cleaning. They consist of polypropylene, glass, cotton. Operating temperature from 85 to 400 degrees. The winding design provides increased resource and high filtration.
  • Cartridge devices include membrane cartridges for microfiltration. The membrane is made of nylon on a polyethylene backing. Such types are used for transportation, purification of chemicals, general industrial processes.
  • Multi-layer cartridges consist of materials made by hot and cold fiber forming technology. This increases the density, filtration area, dirt holding capacity, cleaning speed.
  • Corrugated products are nanomaterials with unique properties. Nanofibers are combined into cylindrical nanostructures that make up polyvinylidene fluoride plates.
  • Activated carbon cartridges are used for adsorption of impurities, filtration of dusty substances. Composed of coconut shells, crushed coal powder, by burning and activating organic fibers.

According to the degree of purification, there are:

single stage
This type operates on the basis of backwash. The cleaning produced by a single-stage filter is coarse. The device cleans sand, rust, precipitation.

The sizes of the particles which are detained by a metal grid from 100 to 800 microns. The backwash setting is automatic. The cartridge is replaced 2 times a year.

two stage
The product helps to get rid of sand, rust, clay, chlorine, precipitation, mechanical elements. Water is deprived of foreign odors and tastes. If necessary, an additional carbon filter is installed on such a device, which cleans it from organic substances.

Purifies all the above impurities, organic, chemical compounds, removes iron. The positive quality of the three-stage filter is water softening, which is achieved by filtering hardness salts. The minimum cell sizes are 0.05 µm.

Type of cleaning

Large impurities are removed. The structure consists of a metal mesh in a housing that holds large impurities. Such a device does not require regular replacement. As it gets dirty, the mesh is removed, washed under running water.

Removes fine suspensions, chlorine, iron, smell, taste, turbidity. The water softens. Such a filter will save the kettle from scale. The design consists of stainless metal or plastic with reinforcement.

Keep in mind that smaller sizes do not guarantee high performance. Therefore, in case of severe pollution, a powerful filter is selected, procedures are carried out: washing, changing cartridges. Units are 20″ or 10″ high. The diameter is 185 mm Big Blue (BB) and 130 – 140 mm Slim Line (SL).

There are four types of cartridge sizes according to world standards (two types according to the first diameter of different heights, two according to the second with a height of 10, 20).

To determine the desired size of the cleaning device, the water consumption per family is calculated. Or the number of water intake points and taps is calculated. For small consumption, the SL standard will suffice, and for a higher consumption, the BB standard is preferable.

Main filter cartridges

Some models for cleaning hot and cold liquids allow you to flush the cartridge without disassembling the housing. The product has a special valve that can be easily opened and cleaned. In complex industrial devices, this procedure is performed automatically.

There are valves to reduce the pressure to the required level. This design prevents the occurrence of hydraulic shocks.

This increases the level of safety, prevents equipment and machinery breakdowns.

Precautionary measures

The filter is a safe device, but some operating rules must be observed.

  • Connecting the device and replacing the cartridges is carried out by a specialist or a person who has carefully read the instructions and safety precautions.
  • Do not place any foreign objects on the cover.
  • The filter is not designed to receive drinking water from technical microbiological unsafe.
  • The system must not be accessible to children.
  • Change cartridges in a timely manner to avoid microbiological contamination of water.
  • In case of actions related to the disassembly of the device, be sure to turn off the water supply.
  • During storage, transportation, use, do not allow shocks, falling of the product, freezing of water in it.
  • Do not store near toxic, strong-smelling substances.
  • Protect the device from dust and dirt.
  • When the temperature in the installation and storage room of the filter drops, protect it from the effects of cold.
  • Any modifications are prohibited.
  • Transportation is allowed on all modes of transport.
  • It is recommended to store the filter at a distance of 1 meter from heating devices.
  • Avoid direct sunlight.
  • Do not treat with strong substances on the outside, and inside cleaning with detergents is not allowed.


  • Leak in line connection.

Occurs when the connection is not tightened enough, seal the threaded connection, wrap it with polymer tape.

  • Leakage from the pressure release button.

If the seal is defective, it is replaced with a new one. Check whether the button fastening screw is tightened enough, if not, tighten it.

  • Leakage between cover and body.

Check the position of the gasket, lubricate with silicone grease, install evenly. If the sealing ring is not suitable, replace it with a new one.

  • The water is cloudy and not purified.

Check if the cartridge is skewed, in this case, unscrew the cap, install it evenly, screw the cap back into place.

The milky color is due to the air in the system, which was allowed during the initial installation or replacement of the cartridge. The quality of the water should be good and the bubbles will come out within 1 to 2 weeks.

  • Poor filter performance.

With insufficient water pressure (for example, on the last floors of the house), a pump is installed. If the cause is contamination of the cartridge, then it is time to replace it with a new one. Since pressure will decrease through blockage
If the cleaning membrane is unsuitable, change the membrane itself with another working one.

  • Noises at work.

Sounds occur when the clamp is incorrectly located, there is an air lock. The clamp is placed correctly.

If the drain line is clogged, clean it.

  • Unpleasant taste, smell.

The cause is an unwashed distribution barrel, which should be cleaned. Another reason is that the filter exhausts its abilities. Replacement required.

To select the main filter, the technical features of the types of products and the characteristics of the water supply system are taken into account.
