What is it needed for

Types of carpet seams

Overcast seams are intended for processing fabric sections and for grinding individual parts of products. They are performed by a looper, which is located in the lower part of the body. The top stitch is made with a needle, the bottom stitch with a looper.

Between themselves, the stitches are connected by an additional thread, which is threaded by a looper located in the upper part of the body. This technique allows you to create strong seams that securely fasten sections of elastic fabrics.

A four-thread seam is made according to the same principle, only in this case an additional needle of the top row is added. It is intended for stitching the edges of products and for grinding parts.

flat lock – This is a special type of flat seam that is sewn only on a fold or cut of fabric. Rolled seams, hem seams and a narrow border are made by a looper without a tongue.

Models with converters allow for two-thread weaving. The converter is a small metal bracket that is mounted on the upper looper. In this case, the threads are threaded into the upper needle and the looper at the bottom.

This technique allows you to get the following types of seams:

• Overcasting narrow;
• Flatlock narrow/wide;
• Role for hem.

Most often, carpet is used to make such seams:

How to choose a carpet

Almost any model of carpet lock works efficiently, reliably processes thin fabrics, therefore it is well suited for home and professional use.

Threader

To work correctly with the coverlock, the user needs to understand the threading procedure. Here it is important to know in what sequence and according to what principle refueling is carried out in order to perform a high-quality line.

Many models are equipped with a special device – the needle threader, which provides automatic threading of the needles. Its principle of operation is simple: the hook passes through the eye of the needle, hooks the threads and pulls them back.

Looper threader

In addition to the working needles, the lower looper must also be threaded. Manual threading is difficult, so a beginner should choose models equipped with an automatic looper threading device.

The choice of thread for carpet

Since the carpet lock is used for thin and split fabrics, therefore, the threads must be selected of the appropriate type. The carpet lock is sensitive to thread tension, so you should use elastic tapered threads for sewing.

It is important that they are thin and not curled. Length of threads on reels: 2000 – 9500 meters.

Dividing type conveyor

In the process of sewing, soft and elastic fabrics are able to stretch, which leads to deformation of the seams being made. To prevent such a situation, coverlocks are equipped with dividing conveyors.

Structurally, they consist of separate combs, one of which is installed in front of the working needles, and the other behind them.

The fabric cut feeder allows you to select the appropriate range of movement of the combs so that the fabric does not stretch or shrink during sewing. Additionally, the conveyor allows you to create gathers, ruffles or waves in the right places.

Converter

A special device that is provided for the upper looper. It allows you to create reliable and durable two-thread weaving of various types. The converter is present in almost all models of coverlocks, regardless of their cost.

Thread tension

Threads can be tensioned manually or automatically. Of course, automatic tension is considered more perfect and preferable for sewing quality. This method provides for tension with the same force, which eliminates sagging.

Manual tension does not guarantee the accuracy of the result, so there may be some imbalance in the thread tension. Therefore, it is recommended to give preference to devices with automatic adjustment.

In expensive models, tensioners are installed in one line, which contributes to uniform tension even at high stitching speeds. In budget devices, they are provided on the front panel, which does not always guarantee a high-quality stretch.

Adjusting the degree of pressure of the foot of the carpet lock

This function allows you to adjust how much the presser foot presses down on the piece of fabric while sewing. Dense fabrics should be pressed lighter, thin fabrics should be pressed tighter.

Different models of devices provide for different adjustment of the degree of pressure, depending on the method – manual or automatic.

Puncture of tissue with a needle

A similar function provides control over the force of a puncture with a needle of any type of tissue. It is performed automatically, taking into account the type and thickness of the material. The option is effective when sewing products from thin knitwear.

Cutting Width Adjustment

This option provides for independent setting of the width of the cut of any type of fabric when processing edges. This allows you to get accurate and even lines.

Thread cutter

Many device models have a thread cutter. This is a thin, sharp blade that is built into the work platform or upper body with needles attached. Some products are equipped with two knives for trimming the threads of the upper and lower feed.

In expensive devices, an automatic thread trimming option is provided, which is activated by a special button located on the front of the case.

Scrap container

The carpet lock, like other sewing equipment, is equipped with a special container for collecting fabric scraps and threads. After work, it can be removed and carefully cleaned of accumulated debris and dust.

Color marking

This option is present in cover stitches and overlock machines, it schematically indicates the correct threading of the loopers, taking into account the types of stitches being sewn.

Sewing speed

The parameter determines the working potential of the device when performing stitches per unit of time. Modern carpetlocks are capable of making from 950 to 1550 stitches per minute.

Expensive machines perform the maximum number of stitches while maintaining high sewing quality.

Working power

The power of the device determines its energy consumption. The lower this indicator, the more economical the device. The operating power of carpet locks is from 80 to 250 watts.

Display

Some models of coverlocks are equipped with displays that display work operations, types of seams performed, stitch patterns, service information, etc.

Expensive models display basic working data – stitch sizes, thread tension, selection of suitable needles.
