5 types of dishwashers

Washing dishes by hand is time-consuming, but with a dishwasher, you can easily wash dishes and cutlery to a shine with a minimum of fuss. This is important for cafe owners, large families and those who cook regularly.
Dishwasher for home
Unlike the physical removal of soiling by hand washing, the machine cleans dishes by spraying hot liquid. Operating temperatures range from 55 to 75°C. Low temperatures are provided for delicate modes.
The combination of water and detergents is circulated by means of a pump. The composition is fed to one (or more) rotating sprinklers. After removing the contamination, the dirty water is drained and the liquid is fed into the system. The rinse cycle starts. Rinse aid is used to remove water stains, stains on dishes and glassware.
Benefits of using rinse aid:
- prevents the formation of streaks and stains on glass utensils;
- enhances the drying effect.
After the rinse cycle is completed, the dishes are dried. Basically, one of several drying methods is used – a heating element at the bottom of the tank, fans, etc.
Some are equipped with a child lock to prevent:
- random start;
- stopping the work cycle by children;
- opening the door while the machine is in operation.
This prevents the danger of an accident (hot water, strong detergent used in the work cycle).
Modern ones have a drop-down door on the front panel, providing access to the loading baskets, mounted on two, and sometimes three, sliding racks. For interior decoration of such equipment, manufacturers choose stainless steel or plastic.
Stainless steel is capable of:
- resist the influence of hard water;
- guaranteed to level the noise;
- better to keep warm;
- dry dishes faster.
Modern models are equipped with food bins that work on the principle of miniature waste disposal devices. They trap parts of the food waste, clearing them of the liquid in which the dishes are cleaned.
If larger food residues are removed before placing the dishes in the appliance, it will not be necessary to proceed to the pre-rinse even if the model does not have an integrated waste disposer.
Many machines are equipped with microprocessor control. The panel for it is traditionally located on the upper front of the door. Experienced manufacturers offer hidden controls for a seamless look.
There are small indicator lights on the front door showing how much time is left in the cycle. Special sensors regulate the duration of the work cycles in accordance with the amount of dirty dishes, dirt in the wash water (the degree of contamination can be detected chemically or optically).
This helps save water and energy when the machine is under partial load.
Modern models are also equipped with a rotary position sensor. With its help, the water resistance is determined in order to achieve the optimal amount of water required for a specific number of sets of dishes and their degree of soiling. The bimetal switch opens the detergent doors during the wash cycle.
The equipment will last longer and more reliably not only due to high-quality interior materials, but also due to the presence of a built-in water softener in standard configurations.
The dishes are only pulled out of the machine after the washing process has been completed by the control system, as the intermediate stages may not yet be clean enough.
Models are sold that work both with heating of the cold water entering them, and without heating, with ready-made hot water recommended by the manufacturer.
This will cost less, as it can only work with hot water supply, if it is possible to heat water more economically than with an electric drive. This machine will spend much less time in the rinsing phase if the incoming water is already hot.
Modern technology is quieter than older models.
All types of detergents for such household appliances contain different combinations of elements. Many of them prevent the formation of lime-type deposits in hard water. The market is dominated by biodegradable environmentally friendly detergents.
The components they contain perform the following functions:
- eliminate lipid and fatty deposits of foodstuffs;
- prevent the formation of stains during drying;
- prevent corrosion of parts.
Sand is found in inexpensive powders. You can check this by dissolving the powder in boiling water and then passing the solution through a coffee filter. Such detergents can damage the dishes and the machine. Powder detergents will leave marks on porcelain.
For appliances, stronger time-saving detergents are used than for manual washing.
Hand wash liquid should not be used in the dishwasher as it creates a lot of foam that will run out. If detergent for hand washing accidentally gets into the machine, the foam can be removed with salt. The machine must be forced into a cycle that allows you to remove the detergent composition.
If a particular model has a built-in water softener, then it will be equipped with a compartment in which special salt is added when needed. The compartment is located separately from detergents, in the lower part of the washing chamber under the lower basket. In most machines, an automatic sensor system notifies the user when the amount of salt needs to be increased.
Some newer dishwashers allow one detergentwhich includes:
- water softener;
- detergent component;
- conditioner.
But most often their use will not fall under the warranty conditions for the operation of equipment.
Large models can hold up to 20 sets at a time. The dishwasher, which is equipped with a double drawer, is shorter than the traditional model. It also holds fewer dishes than a single tub machine. At the same time, it also has the advantage that it provides the ability to launch each box separately.
Double drawers can also be installed in the standard model. This configuration is used when the 90 degree opening of the traditional model door prevents free movement in the kitchen or kitchen island installation. Single drawers are suitable for kitchens with limited space.
Like most appliances, dishwashers come in black, white and stainless steel. Most have unfinished sides and top to fit inside a kitchen cabinet.
Some models are supplemented with a rigid food chopper. It is equipped with a blade that rotates at a speed of several thousand revolutions per minute.
Cafe dishwasher
Large heavy-duty dishwashers are suitable for use in commercial establishments (hotels, restaurants, cafes) where there is a constant need to wash large quantities of dishes. In such modes, the process of cleaning sets of dishes is carried out at 65-71°C.
Compliance with sanitary requirements is achieved through the use of an auxiliary heater. It will provide the machine with water up to 82°C during the final rinse, after the dishes have been treated with chemical disinfectants.
Washing water for the day is heated by an electrical element inside the fuel tanks. It is mixed with a washing solution and consumed in stages (from one load to another) throughout the day. The washing tank has a large mesh basket filter to collect food residues.
Additional soap is periodically added to the main tank to maintain the cleansing power of the water.
Unlike a home dishwasher, cafe appliances do not use a drying cycle. Thus, it works faster than its counterparts in apartments. This difference is indicated on the label. It belongs to one of two options:
- working at high temperature;
- with low temperature operation.
The advantage for a professional kitchen is that in such models the average washing cycle does not exceed three minutes. This reduces the amount of time and labor compared to hand washing, water and detergents.
Built-in dishwasher
Complemented with upholstery panels to match the cabinets already present in the kitchen.
They are divided into two categories:
- in the former, the front panel of the machine is hidden behind the door of the kitchen cabinet;
- the second part of the front surface is closed, but the control panel remains visible in the upper part.
Some manufacturers move controls from the front to the top of the door for the convenience of customers.
Such options help the kitchen look monolithic, but they are less compact than free-standing models.
They are installed in a niche, the height of which is at least 86 cm.
Compact dishwasher
Portable dishwashers range in width from 45 to 60 cm. They are often equipped with wheels. The more space for loading and washing in such a device, the more power (by 20%, unlike standard models) and better sound insulation.
They are more expensive than other varieties. Low prices for such machines may be due to the presence of less reliable materials in their construction. In this case, there may be a violation of the integrity of the material, the formation of chips, rust-affected areas.
Suitable for tenants who are not allowed to rebuild anything on the premises or for homeowners who have to wash a small amount of dishes and do not need to spend money on installation.
They are available with a laminated top surface, so they are more often used as a countertop. The filling hose is easily adapted to kitchen faucets.
In apartments where a standard dishwasher takes up too much space, compact models should be used. They are convenient for families of two. They are also suitable for those who prefer to live alone. It’s also the right solution for couples with small kitchens who want a built-in dishwasher but don’t have enough space.
Some models of compact machines can be placed in the space under the sink. The built-in sink is recommended shallow
Top Loading Dishwasher
Models with vertical (top) loading have a height of up to 44 cm. The constant water consumption when using these types will be 2.4 liters per rinse cycle.
Suitable for installation in corners, equipped with adjustable feet for leveling and rational placement in a room where there is no free space.
The electromechanical control panel and magnetic lid opening sensor make it easy to use.
It will be a solution to the problem of using the internal space of the kitchen, which is difficult to rationally use in the workflow. Top loading will help you use the machine inside the unit, which is not accessible from the front.
Equipped with one or more removable baskets (for their comfortable carrying, loading and unloading of utensils).
You can arrange such equipment in the form of a removable element, inside the kitchen unit, from which it moves for use elsewhere.
