What to do if your smartphone is not charging

1. Check the socket, cable and power adapter
First, make sure that the charge comes to the phone at all. Wiggle the adapter plug for a secure connection, connect the device directly without splitters or adapters, and check if other electrical appliances work from this outlet.
To check the adapter, simply connect another gadget to it and make sure that it is charging. If there is no result, take another known-good block and see if the situation changes. If possible, use only original adapters or high-quality analogues from third-party manufacturers.
To test the cable, carefully inspect it for external damage, and then also try to connect some other device to it or replace the wire itself.
Try different combinations of outlets, adapters and cables. You can also try to change the power supply by connecting your smartphone to a computer.
2. Try wireless charging
If your device supports wireless charging, then you can eliminate problems with the adapter and cable by simply trying to charge the gadget in this way. Do not forget to remove the cover so that nothing interferes with the induction.
3. Reboot your phone
If the gadget is not completely discharged, try restarting it. This procedure clears memory, restarts system processes, and often resolves many problems caused by software crashes – including not charging.
To restart your iPhone, quickly press and release the volume up and down keys in turn, and then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears, ignoring the power off slider. To learn how to restart iPhone models with a Home button, read a separate article.
To restart Android smartphones, press and hold the volume down key and the power button at the same time until the screen turns off and the OS or manufacturer logo appears. In some models, it is enough to hold down the power button, and then select the “Reboot” item in the menu that appears.
4. Make sure the phone is not overheating
Increased heating of the gadget not only reduces its performance, but also leads to the fact that the device stops charging. If you can’t power your phone after a long gaming session or stream, try closing resource-intensive applications, remove the case and wait for a while until the case cools down. Then you can put the gadget back on charge.
5. Check for moisture
Electronics and water are incompatible things. Therefore, even if your phone is water-resistant, liquid droplets entering the connector may block charging for safety reasons.
Take a close look at the port. If there are water particles in there, try gently blowing them out with compressed air, or just let the moisture evaporate naturally, leaving the device alone for a few hours.
6. Clean the connector from debris
Dust, lint and dirt accumulate over time inside all holes and connectors. This leads to the fact that the cable may not be fully inserted into the port, which, in turn, breaks the contact and the phone does not charge.
Shine a flashlight into the recharge hole and, if dirt has accumulated there, gently remove it with a toothpick or toothbrush. Do not use needles, paper clips, or other metal objects that may cause a short circuit.
7. Install available updates
System updates, which are released regularly by manufacturers, solve various problems, including the lack of charging. If any software updates are available, try installing them.
To do this, on the iPhone, go to “Settings” → “General” → “System Update”. On Android smartphones, go to “Settings” → “System” → “System Update”. After that, download the latest versions of the OS.
8. Try charging in safe mode (for Android smartphones)
If power problems are caused by some third-party software, then this is easy to determine by booting your Android phone in safe mode. This is a special state of the device, in which only system processes and the necessary minimum of services are running.
To switch to it, hold down the power button until the smartphone shutdown dialog appears, and then make a long tap on the “Power off” item. After that, you will be prompted to open safe mode. Click OK and wait for the download. It will say “Safe Mode” at the bottom of the screen.
Connect the cable and check – if the phone is charging, then the problem is definitely in one of the recently installed applications. Reboot the device to return to normal mode, and then one by one remove the latest programs and test the recharge process.
9. Do a factory reset
To completely eliminate software problems in the phone, all that remains is to perform a factory reset. This will completely delete all data, so you must first create a backup copy or manually transfer photos, videos and other information.
To reset your iPhone, go to “Settings” → “General” → “Reset” → “Erase content and settings” and confirm the action. On an Android smartphone, go to Settings → System → Factory Reset, then select Delete All Data and press the Reset Phone button to confirm.
10. Contact the service center
If none of the tips above helped, the problem is most likely with the hardware. Such problems are more serious, lie deeper and require the intervention of experienced professionals. In this case, it is better to contact the service center for help.
