Samsung has launched a distribution of updates for old smartphones of the company, which have long ceased to receive fresh firmware. The update is intended to improve GPS stability, but does not include any new features or the latest security patches.

Earlier this month, such an update suddenly began arriving on the 7-year-old Galaxy J7, and now the Galaxy Alpha, Galaxy S5 Neo, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S8 and many other gadgets are receiving it – a total of about 500 million devices across around the world.

The decision to update was made due to detected security threats and a software malfunction of cellular and GPS modules. There are no details on this, but the developers probably found a critical error, since they decided to refresh such old models.

If you are the owner of one of the far from new Galaxy smartphones, the manufacturer recommends checking for the update manually through the system settings.
