As part of the big Unpacked presentation on August 10, Samsung announced not only new foldable smartphones, but also the Galaxy Watch 5 series of smart watches. As expected, it included three models: the basic one in two sizes, and the Watch 5 Pro with a reinforced case. Here’s what you need to know about them.

Galaxy Watch 5

The Galaxy Watch 5 comes standard in two versions: 40mm and 44mm. The former has a 1.2-inch display with a resolution of 396×396 pixels, while the Watch 5 44mm has a 1.4-inch display with 450×450 pixels.

In both cases, Super AMOLED panels with sapphire coating are used and a fairly thin aluminum case – only 9.8 mm with a weight of 28.7 and 33.5 grams, respectively. On the side are two mechanical buttons. MIL-STD-810H protection and full water resistance (5ATM + IP68) are provided.

The watch received a set of new improved sensors for measuring heart rate and blood oxygen saturation, taking ECG, as well as diagnosing the composition of the human body (bioempidance analysis). Another new IR sensor on the rear panel is for measuring body temperature.

The manufacturer noted an increase in the accuracy of all measurements, automatic detection of a large number of different types of physical activity and detailed sleep monitoring at any time, including snoring recognition.

The Galaxy Watch 5 is powered by the same dual-core Samsung Exynos W920 (5 nm) processor that was installed in last year’s Watch 4. It is complemented by 1.5 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory. There is also support for GPS, Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, NFC and eSIM with LTE (optional).

The battery capacity in the 40 mm version was 284 mAh, and in the 44 mm version it was 410 mAh. In both cases, 40 hours of battery life are claimed. An adapter up to 25 W can be used for charging, but it is not included in the kit. The manufacturer promises to recharge up to 45% in just 30 minutes.

As a software platform – Google Wear OS with One UI and a lot of options for customizing standard watch faces. The watch will be sold at a price of $279 (≈17,000 rubles).

Galaxy Watch 5 Pro

This version of the watch is distinguished by a slightly more massive and durable case with a size of 45 mm, made of titanium. The gadget is positioned as a solution for more severe conditions, different from everyday city life. For example, this novelty is perfect for outings into nature.

The screen is the same size as the 44 mm version of the base model – 1.36 inches with a resolution of 450 × 450 pixels. The thickness of the Watch 5 Pro case was 10.5 mm and the weight of the device was 46.5 grams. There is the same protection according to the military standard MIL-STD-810H.

The bezel is touch-sensitive, that is, the frame around the display recognizes swipes, with which you can control various functions.

Also, this model received a D-Buckle strap with a more secure fit and an increased battery with a capacity of 590 mAh. It will last for 80 hours of using the watch in normal mode or 20 hours with an active GPS module.

Watch 5 Pro lets you download walking and biking (GPX) directions with voice navigation, track your progress in real time, and use the Track Back feature to easily get back to where you came from.



The watch will be available in black and gray colors starting at $449 (≈27,500 rubles).
